the way作先行詞，如果是在定語從句中作狀語，有三種引導方法。

先行詞是被定語從句所修飾的名詞、代詞。在定語從句中充當一定的部分。之所以稱它為先行詞，是因為修飾它的定語從句總是放在它之後，先行詞總是出現在定語從句之前，而不同於普通形容詞修飾名詞時。

當「way」表示「方式、方法」，the way在句中作先行詞，後被一個定語從句修飾時，引導定語從句可用that，也可用in which，或什麼都不用。即：
1) the way+that
2)the way+ in which
3)the way + 從句(省略了that或in which)
在通常情況下,用in which 引導的定語從句最為正式,用that的次之,而省略了關係代詞that 或 in which 的,反而顯得更自然,最為常用。
【例句】
i don't like the way that he laughed at me.
=i don't like the way in which he laughed at me.
=i don't like the way he laughed at me.
我不喜歡他用那種方式來嘲笑我。
