泰戈爾的故事大多以悲劇結尾，其實泰戈爾並非是個完全的悲觀主義者，只是他一生經歷了太多死亡其中包括比自己小12歲的妻子，和自己敬愛的幾位嫂子。泰戈爾覺得悲劇更能發人深省，更能讓世人珍惜眼前所有的一切。有傳說《最遙遠的距離》是為其亡妻所作，泰戈爾和自己妻子只生活了短短20年，在妻子死後孤獨終老，並無子嗣。
